The day before

Get ahead of race morning. Everything below should be done, laid out, and off your mind before you sleep.

Ironman bag system

In a full or 70.3 Ironman you don't set up at your own rack; you pack colour-coded bags that volunteers hand you. Drop your blue, red and morning-clothes bags at check-in the day before; special-needs bags go in on race morning. These mirror gear already in your pack list, sorted into each official bag. Racing a sprint or Olympic with a self-racked transition? Skip this and use the Transition set-up below instead.

Morning clothes bag White · morning
What you wear to the start, returned to you at the finish
0/0
Bike gear bag Blue · T1
Grab it after the swim, then stuff wetsuit, cap & goggles back in
0/0
Run gear bag Red · T2
Everything you need for the run leg

Bike special needs ~ halfway
Handed to you mid-bike; pack disposable, may not be returned
0/0
Run special needs ~ halfway

Bag colours and whether special-needs bags are offered vary by race. Always confirm the exact system in your event's athlete guide: some 70.3s have no special-needs option, and returned-bag policies differ.

Transition walkthroughs

Rehearse the sequence in your head the night before. On the day, your body just follows the steps.

T1 · Swim → Bike
  1. Run in and remove cap & goggles as you go.
  2. Strip wetsuit fast, towel your feet.
  3. Helmet on and buckled before you touch the bike, then sunglasses.
  4. Socks + bike shoes on.
  5. Grab the bike and run to the mount line.
  6. Mount after the line.
T2 · Bike → Run
  1. Dismount before the line.
  2. Run the bike to your rack spot.
  3. Helmet off first, always before you move your bike.
  4. Swap shoes, apply Vaseline if needed.
  5. Hat / visor on, race belt on.
  6. Grab gels & water if using.
  7. Start running.
One golden rule: helmet on and buckled before you touch your bike in T1, and helmet off after you rack it in T2. Touching your bike with an unbuckled helmet is a penalty in most races.
